CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF ARBITRATION, ZAMBIA BRANCH GETS NEW PATRON

Lusaka, Tuesday 19th July 2022 – His Lordship the Hon. Chief Justice was yesterday morning conferred upon the honor of Patron of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Zambia Branch.

In accepting the patronage from the CIArb Zambia Branch, the Hon. Chief Justice thanked the institute for the honor and privilege conferred upon him. He pledged to ensure the realization of the Institute’s objectives by having a Judiciary that values and promotes Arbitration, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), in general. The Chief Justice noted the need for more sensitization and publicity of ADR mechanisms and processes, and indicated that the Judiciary does so through judgements, and referring cases to ADR when deserving cases are before the courts.

Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. James Banda, the Chairperson of the CIArb Zambia Branch, thanked the Chief Justice for accepting the mantle of Patron. He also thanked the Chief Justice for the Judiciary’s continued support in promoting ADR processes in Zambia. He noted that the support is evident in the various decisions emanating from the courts. Mr. Banda said that efforts to propose amendments to the Arbitration Act have been done in conjunction with the Zambia Law Development Commission (ZLDC), and that the draft legislation was awaiting the validation process, and thereafter, onward transmission to the Ministry of Justice.

In attendance were Hon. Mr. Justice Charles Kajimanga, the first Chairperson of the CIArb Zambia Branch, other members of the Institute in attendance were Ms. Anne Desiree Armanda Theotis and Ms. Nakasamba Banda-Chanda.
