INCIDENCE OF VIOLENCE AT THE LUSAKA HIGH COURT

INCIDENCE OF VIOLENCE AT THE LUSAKA HIGH COURT

Lusaka, 11th October 2021 – The Judiciary of Zambia deeply regrets the fracas which
occurred at the Lusaka High Court on Friday, 8th October, 2021. We are, however, comforted
that there were no serious casualties or damage to Judiciary or personal property during the
incident, which understandably has generated much public attention.
Our investigations into the matter have established the need for intensified security during this
election petition season.

Going forward, all entrances to the Judiciary premises will be manned by armed police officers.
Further, the number of persons accessing the Court premises during this period will be highly
restricted. Therefore, if parties to election petitions fail to control their sympathizers, the
Judiciary will have no option but to ban persons other than accredited witnesses from
attending any hearings or entering the Court premises.

All visitors will be subjected to thorough screening. Members of the public are, therefore,
advised to cooperate with security personnel. The Judiciary remains committed to ensuring
that public safety for all court users is not compromised.
