The Law association of Zambia, in collaboration with the Judiciary held the first BAR-BENCH SEMINAR ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE, in Lusaka on 1st March 2017. The seminar was attended by her Ladyship The Chief Justice Hon. Lady Justice Mrs. Irene Mambilima, his Lordship the Deputy Chief Justice Hon. Mr.Justice Mr. M. Mwanamwambwa, Supreme Court Justice Hon. Nigel Mutuna, other distinguished and Honorable Judges, senior members of staff of the Judiciary, and distinguished members of the Law Association of Zambia.
The Seminar whose theme was BACKLOG, ITS CAUSES, SOLUTIONS AND ROLES OF JUDGES AND LAWYERS IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE took a twofold approach to addressing the issue at hand from the perspective of both the Bar and the Bench.
In her remarks, The Chief Justice Hon. Lady Justice Irene Mambilima said that she identified the resolution of backlog as the main objective when she took up office in March 2015. “This was in recognition of the fact that the main function of the Judiciary is justice delivery through the proper administration of justice”, her Ladyship said. “In pursuance of this, I constituted a committee on Court Annexed Mediation and Delayed Reduction whose main purpose is to revitalize the use of court annexed mediation” she said.
Hon. Mr. Justice Mutuna the chairman of the Advisory Committee on Court Annexed Mediation and Delay Reduction said that the rationale behind the seminar was to be looked at from both the sides of the Bar and the Bench. He emphasized on the need to exchange ideas from the two sides in order to provoke discussions that would result in dispute resolution, and ultimately lead to a reduction in backlog.
