The Hon. Chief Justice of Zambia, Mrs. Irene C. Mambilima, sitting with Supreme Court Judge Justice Nigel Mutuna, and acting High Court Judge-in-charge, General List Lusaka, Justice Mwila Chitabo S.C is this Wednesday 21st June 2017, Thursday 22nd June 2017, and Friday 23rd June 2017 calling, and admitting to the bar 148 legal practitioners who sat for the repeaters Legal Practitioners Qualifying Examinations (LPQE) in January 2017.
This momentous occasion was graced by Justices of the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, the Court of Appeal, and the High Court of Zambia. Others present were State Counsel, the President of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), Ms. Linda Kasonde, the Director of the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE), Mrs. Ann Malata-Ononuju, and other distinguished members of the legal fraternity.
Speaking when she addressed the newly admitted advocates, Justice Mambilima congratulated them on crossing one of the most difficult hurdles in the legal fraternity in Zambia.
Justice Mambilima in her remarks said “you join a profession that reposes in you the responsibility to extend a hand of hope to those who feel hopeless, to play a critical part in the administration of justice, to engage in the pursuit of fairness and what is right and to be a source of assurance to those who feel they have been wronged and wish to seek redress. Therefore, you are more than simply starting a career. It is a calling to an honourable profession and hence you are not just admitted but called to the Bar”.
In their remarks, both Ms. Kasonde, and Mrs. Malata-Ononuju emphasized on the need for the newly admitted advocates to do some introspection and decide on what kind of impact they would want this occasion to have on their future as torch bearers in the legal fraternity, and administration of justice in Zambia.
