Hon. Mrs. Justice Maria Mapani Kawimbe is a Judge of the Constitutional Court, having been appointed to the Constitutional Court on 3rd April, 2023. Justice Kawimbe holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Zambia and a Master of Laws degree from the University of Lund in Sweden. She was admitted to the bar in 1995.
Prior to her current appointment, Justice Kawimbe served as Judge of the High Court, having been appointed to the Court on 12th May, 2016. She served as the Director of Governance in Ministry of Justice from 2012 to 2016. Justice Kawimbe has also served in various other positions in the Ministry of Justice, these include: Coordinator of the Governance Secretariat from 2007 to 2012; Deputy Director of the International Law and Agreements Department from 2003 to 2007; Principal State Counsel from 2001 to 2003; Assistant Senior State Advocate from 1997 to 2001; and State Advocate in 1996.
The Judge served as Vice Chairperson of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal from 2014 to 2016 and as Secretary of the Legal and Justice Reforms Commission from 2014 to 2016. She is a member of the African Union Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, as well as a member of the Zambia Association of Women Judges.
