Chipata, February 21, 2024 – His Lordship the Hon. Chief Justice Dr. Mumba Malila, SC is currently undertaking a working tour of Eastern Province, underscoring the Judiciary’s commitment to ensuring access to justice for all citizens. Over the past three days, Chief Justice Malila has conducted extensive tours of Nyimba, Petauke, and Chipata, focusing on assessing court infrastructure and staff welfare.
During his visit, the Chief Justice made a poignant stop at the Chipata Correctional Facility, also known as Namuseche, where he engaged directly with inmates. With a particular emphasis on the welfare of inmates awaiting appearance before the courts, Chief Justice Malila’s interactions shed light on the challenges faced by individuals within the justice system and underscored the importance of humane treatment for inmates.
The Chief Justice highlighted measures implemented by the Judiciary in an effort to expedite court cases. These include the stationing of resident Judges in all provincial capitals, holding of parallel court sessions, and the assigning of resident magistrates in Vubwi and Mambwe districts in the quest to enhance access to justice for residents of the two districts who find themselves in conflict with the law.
Reflecting on his visit, Chief Justice Mumba Malila stated, “Ensuring access to justice and upholding the rights and dignity of all individuals within the legal system are paramount priorities for the judiciary. This visit has provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by both inmates and court personnel, and I am committed to working towards meaningful reforms that promote fairness, efficiency, and compassion.”
