LORD BURNETT OF MALDON, LORD CHIEF JUSTICE OF ENGLAND AND WALES VISITS THE JUDICIARY OF ZAMBIA
Lusaka 1st June, 2023 — The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Ian Burnett of Maldon, accompanied by among others, the British High Commissioner to Zambia, Mr. Nicholas Woolley, and Mr. Ben Yollop, the Lord Chief Justice’s Chief of Staff, this morning visited the judiciary of Zambia, and was received by His Lordship the Hon. Acting Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Michael Musonda, SC.
The visit was aimed at further strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two judiciaries and exploring avenues for future collaboration in the field of law and justice.
In his Remarks, Acting Chief Justice Musonda, SC said that the visit served as a significant opportunity to exchange insights and experiences, providing a platform to discuss common challenges and explore potential avenues for cooperation and knowledge-sharing between the two judiciaries. He emphasized the need for judicial reform, and developing a robust case
management system.
The Lord Chief Justice Burnett expressed his keenness in visiting the judiciary of Zambia, signifying his utmost respect for the institution. He stressed the importance of judicial dialogue between judiciaries, emphasizing commonalities in the judiciaries in the Commonwealth such as promoting the principles of democracy, rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary.
He cited financial crimes, international terrorism and the breakdown of family ties, as some of the common challenges plaguing the different judiciaries the world over.
The visit by the Chief Justice of England and Wales to the Judiciary of Zambia exemplifies the commitment to fostering international relationships and promoting legal cooperation. It sets the stage for future engagements and endeavors aimed at further strengthening existing ties between the two judiciaries and contributing to the advancement of justice and the rule of law.
