Rabat, 23rd November 2022 – Her Ladyship, the Hon. Deputy President of the Constitutional Court, Justice Professor Margaret Mulela Munalula is attending the 6th Congress of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa (CJCA), in Rabat, Morocco, under the theme “The African Constitutional Jurisdictions and International Law”.
The four (4) day conference held bi-annually aims to promote the exchange of experiences and to bring together, in a common African framework, African jurisdictions responsible for ensuring compliance with the Constitution; promote constitutional justice in Africa; promote solidarity and mutual aid; promote the sharing of experiences and information in constitutional jurisprudence; establish links with the legal community; and highlight Africa’s contributions on the international playing field in the area of constitutional justice.
Taking centre stage during the 6th Congress are topical issues of discussion such as the status of international law in the respective members States and the procedures of international engagement, highlighting the interplay between the supremacy of the Constitution and international law.
Other areas of discussion are the processes of domestication of international law and the specificities and limits of its application in the respective Jurisdictions, specifically, the role played in promoting human rights. The Congress cited the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, as an example of international law practices that are applicable to member States.
Justice Munalula is accompanied by Mr. Ikechukwu Iduma, Registrar of the Constitutional Court. In attendance are fourty-seven African Constitutional Jurisdictions, three (3) non African observers, such as Russia, and international institutions such as the National Centre for State Courts, from the United States of America.
