PRESS STATEMENT
Following a News item on Prime Television alleging that some suspects at Kasempa Correctional Facility had been dubiously released from Prison, the Judiciary sent a team to Kasempa and Solwezi to investigate the matter. The Preliminary findings of the investigation are of great concern to the Judiciary. To this end, the following judicial and administrative steps have been taken;
- The Judiciary has with immediate effect placed on suspension Hon. Sandras Samakayi the Magistrate at Kasempa, and Hon. Kunda Joseph Malabo, the Resident Magistrate at Solwezi pending further investigation and action.
- The Hon. Judge-in-Charge of North-Western Province has called for the record in order to ascertain the propriety of the Order and the attendant proceedings;
- The Judiciary will engage relevant Institutions to address lapses noted.
The Judiciary wishes to thank Prime Television for bringing this matter to its attention, and wishes to encourage the general populous especially the Zambian people – the repository of Judicial authority – to take a positive active role in ensuring that they hold to account those whom they have delegated their Judicial authority.
It is the Judiciary’s view that Justice must never be perceived as a burden to be carried by one Institution, but rather a result of positive collective effort of all concerned.
