Hon. Lady Justice Gertrude Mukuwa Imbwae is a Judge of the Constitutional Court, appointed on 27th May 2026.
Justice Imbwae holds a Master of Laws Degree in International Business Law from the University of Manchester and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Zambia. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE) and was admitted to the Bar in 1985.
Prior to her appointment, Justice Imbwae served as Lecturer in Comparative Constitutional Law at ZIALE from 2012 to 2026, and concurrently engaged in private practice as a Legal Practitioner at Gertrude Imbwae Legal Practitioners from 2023 until her appointment to the Bench.
Justice Imbwae also served as Permanent Secretary (Administration) in the Ministry of Justice from 2003 to 2011, and as Member and Vice Chairperson of the SADC Electoral Advisory Council from 2011 to 2016. She served as Deputy Director in International Law and Agreements in the Ministry of Justice from 1995 to 2003, Secretary to the Mung’omba Constitution Review Commission in 2003, Acting Treasury Counsel in the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, Registrar of the Revenue Appeals Tribunal, Senior Legal Officer at the Development Bank of Zambia, and State Advocate and Senior State Advocate in the Attorney General’s Chambers. She also led Zambian delegations to present and defend various Human Rights Instruments before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
In private practice, Justice Imbwae worked at Messrs Nkwazi Chambers and as Partner in Messrs Mwansa, Phiri, Shilimi and Theu Legal Practitioners.
She has served on the boards of many institutions, including PUMA Energy Zambia PLC, the Zambia Revenue Authority, Zambia Railways, the Road Transport and Safety Agency, the Zambia Law Development Commission, ZIALE, the Legal Aid Board, and the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA). She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK).
