PROFILE
Hon. Mr. Justice Charles Kafunda is a Judge of the High Court. He was appointed Judge of the High Court on 14th July, 2021. Justice Kafunda holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Zambia and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. He was admitted to the bar in 2004.
Prior to his current appointment, Justice Kafunda served as Chief Registrar and Director of Court Operations in the Judiciary from 2016 to 2021. Justice Kafunda has served in various other positions in the Judiciary since he first joined as a Magistrate Class II in 2003 at the then Chikwa Subordinate Court of Lusaka.
He served as Deputy Director/ Deputy Registrar of the then High Court Commercial list in 2015, Deputy Director/ Deputy Registrar of Lusaka High Court from 2012 to 2015, Deputy Director/ Deputy Registrar of the Subordinate Court from 2011 to 2012, Chief Resident Magistrate of the Lusaka Subordinate Court from 2008 to 2011, Principal Resident Magistrate at the Lusaka Subordinate Court from 2007 to 2008, Senior Resident Magistrate at Choma Subordinate Court from 2006 to 2007 and Resident Magistrate Choma Subordinate Court from 2005 to 2006. Justice Kafunda also served as a Research Assistant for the Woman in Law and Development in Africa from 2000 to 2001.
During the time he served as Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Justice Kafunda also served as Secretary to the Judicial Service Commission and Council of Law Reporting, established under Chapter 219 and Chapter 46 of the Laws of Zambia, respectively.
Justice Kafunda also served on the Project Management Team of the Zambia Justice Information System, a project to computerise the Zambian Judiciary as Deputy Director from 2010 to 2014 and as Director from 2014 to 2015. From 2018 to 2021, Justice Kafunda served as Director of the Project to develop an Automated Case Management System for the Zambian Courts. From 2011 to 2015, he served as Task Manager of the Access to Justice Project for the Judiciary of Zambia.
Justice Kafunda is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the Magistrates and Judges Association of Zambia.
