PROFILE
Hon. Mr. Justice Kazimbe Chenda is a High Court Judge, Commercial Division, appointed in December 2018. He previously served in private practice, specialising in corporate advisory and commercial dispute resolution, with his last position being a Partner at a Chambers ranked law firm.
At the Bar, he contributed to the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), including on the law reform committee, the Lands Tribunal and as a mentor. On the Bench, his mentorship work continued with LAZ and extended to the University of Pretoria for final-year undergraduate students. He has also contributed to the mentorship initiatives of Empower360.
Judge Chenda has been involved in capacity-building, including trial advocacy at the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education and induction training for judges, registrars, research advocates, magistrates and the Capital Markets Tribunal. He has served on administrative committees in the Judiciary and sits on the Chief Justice’s advisory committee on performance management. He is keen on strategic networking for capacity building for the Judiciary.
Since joining the Judiciary, Judge Chenda’s continuous legal education has included insolvency, competition law, intellectual property, pensions, insurance and environmental protection.
He is also a practicing arbitrator and member of the Zambian branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He was a panelist at the Lusaka Arbitration Week (annual event) in 2025.
Internationally, Judge Chenda is involved with the Standing International Forum of Commercial Courts (SIFoCC) and was a panelist at its fifth and sixth full meetings in 2024 and 2025, respectively. He contributed to the extended version of the case management principles of SIFoCC. In 2024, he was interviewed by the Judiciary of England and Wales in commemoration of International Men’s Day. He was a speaker at the at the first continent specific roundtable meeting of SIFoCC in partnership with the Africa Chief Justices’ ADR Forum in 2025. He is part of the working group of SIFoCC appointed to revise the multilateral memorandum on enforcement.
Judge Chenda is a member of INSOL International (INSOL) and has been a panelist at its Africa Round Table Conferences in 2023, 2024 and 2025. He served on the Judicial Steering Committee of INSOL and was involved in organizing the 2024 multinational judicial colloquium in conjunction with the World Bank Group and UNCITRAL. He co-authored the pioneer Zambian law module for inclusion in the INSOL foundation certificate in international insolvency law.
He also featured on the “Global Perspectives” podcast in 2025 under the NextGen Programme of the International Insolvency Institute. He was a speaker at the Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners of Nigeria (BRIPAN) International Conference, 2025.
Judge Chenda is also a member of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association.
