Hon. Mrs. Justice Sharon Kaunda Newa

 

 

PROFILE

Hon. Lady Justice Sharon Nkandu Kaunda Newa is a Judge of the Court of Appeal, appointed on 27th May 2026.

Prior to her current appointment, she served as a Judge of the High Court, appointed in June 2016. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Zambia and was admitted to the Bar on 29th April 2005.

Before her appointment to the High Court Bench, Justice Newa served in various judicial capacities, including as Registrar of the Subordinate Courts from March 2015 to June 2016 and as Registrar of the Commercial Court from November 2011 to March 2015.

Justice Newa began her judicial service as a Magistrate Class II in Kafue in June 2001. She later served as Resident Magistrate, Senior Resident Magistrate, and Principal Resident Magistrate in Lusaka, before serving as Chief Resident Magistrate in Ndola from March 2011 to November 2011.

Before entering the Judiciary, she served as a Learner Legal Practitioner at the National Legal Aid Clinic for Women and Lloyd Siame and Company Legal Practitioners.

Justice Newa has served as Chairperson of the Child Justice Forum from 2006 to 2011 and as Chairperson of a Committee constituted by the Zambia Law Development Commission to review child-related legislation in 2009.

She is an alumna of the Edwards Mediation Academy and the Weinstein International Foundation, where she trained as a mediator. She holds a Certificate in Introduction to Domestic Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).

Justice Newa is a member of the Zambia Association of Women Judges, where she serves as Vice President, and is also a member of the International Association of Women Judges.
